Tethering the Mind
An In Person Day Long Mindfulness Retreat
Saturday, August 24, 2024

If we want "steadiness of mind" we have to learn skillful means that will reduce its tendency to just wander wherever it wants to go. The image of a tether is a useful one. We need to find the right length for the tether. Too short and the mind become tight and constricted. Too loose and the mind's normal habit to wander takes over.

Mindfulness is often defined as the practice of keeping the mind focused on what is actually arising in each moment. One way to do this is to use the method of "noting", consciously using a few simple words to describe or note what is arising. The noting more tightly "tethers" us to what is predominant in the mind at any moment. The instructions during this day long retreat will help you learn or refine your practice by focusing in this way.

This retreat is open to anyone who has a sincere desire to deepen their practice and will consist of instruction, seated and walking practice, and Buddhist philosophy to put the practice into context.
